It is built in 1974 and designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjakovic, the library as an architectural whole is a combination of domes and cupolas and belongs to the type of “new regionalism” architecture.
Kosovo National and University Library (known then as the People’s and University Library of Kosovo) started its activity in this building in 1982.
It is a 4 storey building with an area of 16.500m2 of which 13.500m2 is usable surface. In view of the composition, the library is distinguished as a whole of domes wrapped with steel skeletal membrane, which in combination with zenith illumination made through domes creates a lighting system that provides ample lighting and protects from excessive insolate. Altogether there are 99 domes separated by segments that resemble the brain and symbolically present knowledge.
The functional organization is based on the experiences of modern libraries. The library has reading rooms, periodical room, halls and rooms of special funds, space for book conservation laboratories, the, photo-lab, book-binding facility, storage and administrative space. Reading rooms are divided into floors: ground floor - two large halls for 400 readers, the second floor - specialist rooms, on the third of and fourth there are rooms for scientific workers. The book warehouse is located in two underground floors. The library has two amphitheatres, a 150 + 40 seats and one with 75 seats.
The library has mechanized book transport, and file cabinets close to all reading rooms.
Library is operational, but the transport of books needs to get modernized, files should be digitalised and reading rooms should be modernised including other interventions.
