History

The fountain of Qor Aga is located in the historic area of Prizren, within the complex of the Haxhi Ramadani mosque (Qor Aga). The period of construction and builder are not known so far. Since it is linked to the surrounding wall of the mosque it is also known as fountain of Qor Aga. Based on analogy with public fountains built in Prizren, form, materials and construction techniques we assume that this fountain dates from the end of the XIX century. From the time it was built until now, the Fountain serves as a public neighbourhood fountain for supply of residents and passers-by with drinking water and hygiene maintaining for believers who use the mosque. The fountain is built with rectangular carved limestone. Its layout is rectangular ended in a pyramid shaped simple profiled crown, built of carved stones. At the front part there is a shallow frame shaped carving-processing with staggered profiled arches of 7.5 cm width. In the middle of this front part, there is a niche for putting the soap, whilst there is no inscription and we have information that it ever existed. From the time it was built until now, it remained in the original place with some adjustments made. The fountain ended with a crown built of four heavy bricks of baked clay and with a sponge stones sequence, ended with a set a tiling sequence. After the studies made, it is confirmed that the crown was not the original. During the restoration done in 2014 based on analogy with fountains of XIX century, the crown was built in three parts, without any decorative treatment to present and distinguish the original parts from those reconstructed.
