History

Residential Complex "Emin Gjiku" is located at the core of the old city of Prishtina, in the northeast of the end of current center of the city, near the Great Hammam and the Mosque of Sultan Mehmet Fatih. Ensemble "Emin Gjiku" was built in the early 19th century and it was owned by the known family Gjinolli. Emin Gjinolli's nickname was "little man", or in Turkish Eminçik, which later turned into Emin Gjik, from which the complex is named. The complex consists of two large courtyards: the courtyard at the entrance with a barn and a stone building and internal courtyard on which the family house and the guest house is located, and which currently they serve the Ethnological Museum. Stone building, restored there in 1960, is the only building remained from the Old Bazaar (Çarshia). It is a one floor building covered with stone roof, once the blacksmith shop, while currently the center of contemporary art called “Station”. Courtyards are surrounded by high walls, 55 cm thick, constructed of mud-brick and timber beams. Houses and barn reflect the architectural harmony of proportions and elements. During different periods of time (almost two centuries), the complex has undergone many changes as a result of changing the function. But as a whole, complex "Emin Gjiku" remains one of the best examples of town houses in the early XIX century. The complex "Emin Gjiku" is the property of the Museum of Kosovo, whose mandate it to facilitate access to complex buildings, collection, programs and services for all visitors.
