History

Over the Lumbardh Gorge, 5 km north-east of Prizren, close to the ruins of the Monastery of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, on the right side of the current road Prizren-Sredska-Prevalla, there is an Old Stone Bridge. The bridge was built on the old road going from Prizren, through the Lumbardh Gorge, through the Sharr Mountain and to the Vardar valley, towards Skopje and further. Therefore, for quite a long period, the road enabled traffic and trade between Prizren and Skopje. There are no oral or written resources to verify its time of establishment, but based on its similarity to the town Old Bridge, it may be assumed that the two bridges were built around the same time, by the end of 15th Century, or the early 16th century. The Stone Bridge over the Lumbardh River is a small, mono-arched bridge, built in quality river stones, while its arch is built in masonry stone, connected in plaster. Its dimensions are: length 20 m (approx), width 3,5 m, arch length 13 m, its height 6 m. the bridge distals are of masonry stone, with the following dimensions: 45x15x70 cm. The bridge surface is paved in cobble stone. The bridge is rich in artistic and aesthetic value, and it is well-suited with the rocky landscape of the Gorge in its horizon. With the pavement of the road, and the construction of the new bridge in 1955, very near the Old Bridge, circumstances changed. The Old Bridge lost its primary function in centuries, and it is currently used only by an occasional pedestrian, and it is almost inactive, while the circumstances have also reflected on the maintenance thereof. Despite it being one of the rarest original monuments kept to our time, it is not maintained. Its condition is critical, the surface is captured by gravel and grass, distals damaged, and there are structural damages as well. With its features, this bridge pertains to the group of Ottoman bridges constructed in the region. It is the only construction of this type preserved in its original shape to this day, and therefore, it bears high architectural and scientific value.
