History

The church of Samadrexhë is located in Samdrexhë village, 6 km to the east of the town of Vushtrria. According to population anecdotes, the church was built in 14th century from the locals of this settlement, dedicated Saint John. From its construction to 1999 the church served the purposes of the sacred building for orthodox community. In 1932, a new church was built on the foundations of the earlier church, identical with the one of 14th century. The reconstruction was made according to the project of prof. Nag UNBG, Aleksandër Dreko, while the painting the church with frescos was made by the known Serb painter Zhivorad Nastasijevic. No signs of frescos could be found today. At the time of intervention, skeletons, human bones and other things (jewellery, fragments) were found, which in terms of age matched with XIV century (Belgrade University – scientific work, published by IMMS). According to population anecdotes passed on through decades and the Serb community, it is said that Serbs fought against each other on disputes over power in 1389, at the time of the battle of Kosova. The church with rectangular base was built by cut stones, with naves protruding to the east and the entrance to the west, rosettes with cross were placed above the entrance.The roof was damaged, there is a large opening over the apse of the altar, windows have no glasses, the bell tower and the church surrounding wall are ruined, while the bell is located in Zveqan.
