History

In road axis "Nazim Gafurri", as an integral part of the traditional architectural ensemble of the Bazaar Mosque, Fountain, Kosovo Museum, Clock Tower and Archaeological Park, entirety set under state protection, the Mosque of Jashar Pasha is located, which serves as sanctuary for Islamic believers in Prishtina. According to written records, the construction of this mosque dates since the 15th century, while its appearance mainly dates since the 19th century. This coincides with the time when Jashar Pasha, as a citizen of Prishtina, has funded radical repairs implementation of this mosque, and since then this mosque is named the Mosque of Jashar Pasha. This monument presents an example of late Baroque style during the Ottoman period. The building has a square plan - 10.50 x 10.50 m, it has a stone structure one-domed type with wood porch of opened type, and it has a stone minarets and a very narrow yard. The interior presents a unique space illuminated through windows arranged in levels, with painted walls, and in its structure it has pew, pulpit and mihrab. The facade of the entrance part and wooden ceiling of the lobby are also decorated with plant motifs. The ten-angled minaret placed near mosque possesses sculptural decoration on the bottom part and elegant gallery placed in the upper part. Fountain located at the center of the courtyard of mosque is a simple stone structure. Although over the centuries this mosque has undergone transformations from its origins, in its structure it has all the characteristic elements layered over the centuries and it is a construction set with architectural, artistic, historical and social value. Besides its importance for Islamic belife community, this mosque ranks as the prominent and important construction work for the development of architecture and cultural-historical landscape of the city of Prishtina.
