History

One of the oldest objects of the town, called the mill of Shabanaj is located in centre of the Deçan, built in the XIX century by local craftsmen. This mill, served as a public facility for the needs of the population of Deçan and beyond in grinding of grain. It was an industrial building of the XIX century that belongs to the type of mills with water with only one opening. With a rectangular base, the facility as a whole is built with hewn and non-hewn stones. The opening in the centre over the river stream is realized with curve made of little hewed stones. Has a simple hipped roof and it’s covered with traditional tiles. The grinding mechanism consisted of two grinding stones of the mill which functioned by the help of the water. Due to the special importance that the Mill of Shabanaj had in the collective memory of the people of Deçan, despite the fact that it was in a destroyed condition, after the war it was chosen to be reconstructed for use as a community centre. Therefore, with the help of the Itallian Foreign Ministry, and the Italian “NGO INTERSOS,, this mill was restored in 2005. After the restoration, the facility got its original appearance. Currently, the Mill serves for various exhibitions, with an emphasis on traditional handicrafts-traditional costumes of the region of Dukagjin.
