History

The Tahir Begu's Konak (residence) is located in the old part of Peja city, built in 1800. The residence was located at the centre of the town until 1960 (between the municipal building and the post office), but was moved to “Haxhi Zeka” Square, at its current location, and is used as ethnographical museum. The decision to re locate it came from the previuos rule. Part of the Tahir Begu’s Konak was also surrounding yard walls, and extension of surrounding walls in ancient times. Further, the medieval hall, as a free and an open space on the ground floor, raised over timber column, should also be seen as an extension of porch-peristyle of an ancient house. This antique house, in terms of architecture and function of its composition – space layout, matches the features of many medieval houses of Peja. It was preserved but its preservation entailed difficulties, especially in fencing the house. Now, the scheme of the house is of “G” type. The Tahir Begu's Konak is characterised by the roof ridge made of wood, accordion windows, the upper sitting room “divanhane”, that represents a classic creativity of a high interest, high construction values and a high architectural value. Its current use as regional ethnographical museum is quite appropriate. The residence is under legal protection since 1955, by decision no. 610. Cadastral lot no. 2851/1, map no. 31, with a surface area of:14.62 X 13.71m, and is located in “Haxhi Zeka” Square, in Peja.
