The Roman Ulpiana, one of the most important settlements in the region, was situated in the vicinity of Prishtina, built on the foundations of an Illyrian settlement, which was later, after an earthquake, a disaster which struck Dardania, erected as one of the largest Byzantine centers in early medieval times, named "Justiniana sekonda". It was built by the Great Roman-Byzantine Emperor Justinian, in the VI Century. Settlements of early iron times are also found along Taukbashçe Park and the Normal School, throughout the complex all the way to the Gçrmia pool, evidence of the first Illyrian settlements in the vicinity of Prishtina. For over one century, in the second half of the XVII century, Prishtina was under the feudal rule of the Albanian Family Gjini. The old town of Prishtina was situated between two rivers: Vellusha and Prishtina (Prishtevka), which, now underground, conceal the natural characteristics of the old town. The old center of the town, with the Bedestan, Llokaqi Mosque (XVI century), the Catholic Church, the Synagogue and the Old Market, were fully destroyed under the communist regime of the 1950s.

Prishtina includes 7 municipalities: Prishtina, Podujeva, Obiliq, Drenas, Lipjan, Fushë Kosova, and has listed a total of 118 sites in the list of Cultural Heritage for Temporary Protection, of which 51 profane, 27 sacral and 35 utilitarian.
