History

Gracanica Monastery is located on the left shore of the river Gracanka, to the south of Prishtina. Today’s monastery is a reconstruction of a 14th century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which church was built on the substructure of an early Christian basilica of 6th century. According to its spatial concept it belongs to a five domes church type on square base with inscribed cross, characteristic of Byzantine architecture. In the exterior an ideal relationship of monastic proportions and volume was achieved. Gradual rise of arches and domes moving towards the upper part, as well as separation of front facade into three parts through the arches, provide the church a remarkable harmony and special architectural value. The drum of the main dome is original, and above it the arches meet, thus emphasizing square base of inscribed cross. Four side domes build above quite high drums, which emphasize the vertical of the building, and which was not typical characteristic of that period. The largest restoration on monastery was made by the end of the 16th century, where all openings in the outer narthex were walled and new frescoes were painted. The Monastery suffered heavy damage during the last 17th century, while after World War II it was renovated by nuns and since that time it has served as their assembly. The interior of the monastery is rich of frescoes. Famous painters Mihajl and Evtihije from Thessaloniki have finished frescoes in the main church by 1321, of which the Great Cycle Holidays, Passion and Miracles of Christ are the most popular. Besides extraordinary frescoes of 14th century, exonarthex the monastery contains many precious post-Byzantine frescoes of the 16th centuries, as well as a treasure of icons of later periods out of which the most important are the icons of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. In 2006 Gracanica Monastery joined the World Heritage List of UNESCO under the name: Medieval Monuments in Kosovo.
