History

The former “'Union Hotel” building currently the commercial centre 'Benetton' building is one of the outstanding examples of buildings of modernism architectural style in the period of Austro-Hungarian influence in Prishtina, built in XX century, precisely in 1927. The building layout is in the form of letter “L” with an area of 500 m2, divided by floors in the basement, two floors and attic-type 'Mansarde. The central volume of facade dominates the building, made in junction of the two wings of the building, in the form arc-shaped with a roof of circular pavilion. Entrance in the corner of the building is highlighted with pillars and windows are aligned with two columns and architrave form“timpanoni”. The building is designed to perform hotel functions. At the beginning it is called Hotel 'National' and during the World War II it changed its name to Hotel “Skender Beg”, after the war, again changing the name to “Nova Jugoslavija”, and last decades of the XX century until 2013 is called Hotel 'Union' and after this year its function is transferred into trading business centre called Trade Centre 'Benetton'. Building materials are traditional, stone, baked clay brick and wood structures. Rolled copper cover plates are dominating. The Premise suffered mostly minor transformations. In 2009 the building was burned. During the conversion to a mall, the wrap of the premise is preserved while the structure of the building is completely transformed to serve new functions with an open plan. Burned windows of the building were replaced and the roof was rebuilt, two corners of the building were opened to vitrify and space in the form of curved “L” was added to the roof. Today, the premise is in good condition.
