History

The house of Xhafer Deva is built in the old centre of the city of Mitrovica. This building has generally preserved its shape and view. Initially, the house was used for residential purposes. The house was built by Xhafer Deva, one of the most renowned personalities of the region. Xhafer Deva had a key role in the period 1941–1944, in organizing and defending the Albanian population. For some time, Xhafer Deva held key positions – a mayor of Mitrovica, and Minister of Internal Affairs in the Albanian Government (1943/44). After the war, persecuted by the government, he migrated to the USA, where he also died (1978). The two-storey house belongs to the houses including a doksat and angles. One characteristic is that in the middle of the northern façade, a closed porch appears, while on the southern façade, the view to the street, there is a doksat (protruding porch). The ground floor is used for commercial premises today, while the upper floor is used for housing, preserving thus the function for which it was built.
