History

The building known as the Hunters Home is located inside the Regulatory Area “Qendra”, the UDP of Mitrovica. The building was built in the 20th century, namely in 1932-33. The building was constructed for residential purposes. The building still preserves its originality. This house is the only evidence remaining from the Hebraic humanist Dr. Nehmin Shefajn, known today as the “Hunters Home”. Dr. Nehmin Shefajn had come to Kosovo by the early 20th century, from the Soviet Union, as member of the Internaional Red Cross mission. He has cured many citizens of Mitrovica and Kosovo from chicken pox epidemics of that time. In February 1942, Dr. Shefajn was imprisoned by Nazi soldiers, and by 8th of May, he was gunned down in the infamous camp of Banjica in Belgrade. Several days after his imprisonment, his wife Hedviga and two daughters were arrested and imprisonment somewhere in Europe, and never came back. The building has a cellar, a ground floor, and the upper floor. The cellar contains the commercial premises, while the two floors were designated for housing. The building is designed in modern European architecture style, a style which started penetrating the areas by the second and third decade of the 20th century. The building is characterized by a protruding entry gate in the façade of the building, an open terrace on the upper floor, and the large openings – windows, in comparison to the oriental style of construction until that time. The building underwent transformations in the interior, it changed uses, and it is now used as an administrative facility for the Sports Hunters Association “Trepça” in Mitrovica.
