History

The mill is located in Tabakhana complex, which lies on the northern coast of Lumbardhi between Ahmed Bey Mosque, the Mosque of Suzi and Belediye Building. Tabakhana neighbourhood is named due to leather processing with all relevant processes: washing, drying, painting etc. After the floods of November 1979, Tabakhane was almost completely destroyed and lost its characteristic appearance, so now the mill and leather warehouse re the only ones remained. Tabakhana mill was built in the XVIII century. It has a rectangular layout, covered with three guttered roof. Its space is divided into two parts, where the millers rooms and other spaces such as the entrance, two stones for grinding grain, place for non-grinded grain, place for grinded grain, and water channel. From the time it was built until today, mill has undergone numerous renovations. During the 1979 floods a large part of the wall structure was demolished. Now, a part of the structure of stone and mud walls of the western and southern part remained from the original state. Tabakhana mill is the only active mill in Prizren, and is a material witness to the way how flour used to be processed in the past.
