History

The Bajrakli Mosque was built on the core of the Old Bazaar in Peja, previously an open market, a characteristic of Albanian cities. The mosque was an endowment of Mehmet Fatih who also funded the Grand Mosque in Prishtina. The mosque was built on the seventh decade of 15th century. It is a classic monumental building with a full compositional scheme. In its scheme, the mosque is made of the prayer room, foyer and a minaret. The prayer room is covered with domes and stand over pandantive system. Also, the foyer is covered by three small, mutually proportional domes. In the interior of the prayer room, mihrab (Imam’s spot), mymber (elevated sermons platform) and makfil. The interior is depicted for its mural paintings, containing elements of flora, geographic solids and Koran citations. The mosque is also featured for its plastics, tiny sculpture and other profilizations of main portal and windows. The mosque is also sanctuary to the cemetery of prominent city’s personalities, including the grave of Haxhi Zeka and Ali Gucia. Graves also contain decorative markings. The mosque was burnt by Serb forces during the war of 1998-1999. The restoration of mosque was done after the war, at both architectural elements and the sculpture paintings.
